Frequently asked questions
What ticker symbols are supported?
Most US-listed stocks and ETFs are supported — for example AAPL, TSLA, SPY, QQQ, BTC-USD. You can also try many international tickers using their exchange suffix (e.g. ASML.AS for Amsterdam, 7203.T for Tokyo). If a ticker isn't found, you'll see an error message.
How far back can I go?
It depends on the ticker. Most major US stocks and ETFs have data going back to their IPO date or listing date. Cryptocurrency pairs typically go back to around 2014–2015. If you enter a date before available data, the calculator will use the earliest available price and let you know.
Why is the date different from what I entered?
Markets are closed on weekends and public holidays. If you pick a non-trading day, we automatically use the closest available trading day and show you a note explaining the adjustment.
Do the results include dividends?
Yes. We use adjusted closing prices, which account for both dividends and stock splits. This gives a more accurate reflection of your total return compared to using raw closing prices alone.
How current is the data?
Prices are sourced from a third-party financial data provider and are typically delayed by at least 15 minutes. Results reflect the most recent available closing price, not a real-time quote. Do not use this tool for live trading decisions.
What are the benchmark comparisons?
After your result, we show how the same investment would have performed in a few common alternatives over the same time period — including S&P 500 (SPY), Nasdaq (QQQ), gold (GLD), and Bitcoin (BTC-USD). This helps put your result in context.
Is this financial advice?
No. What If I Bought is for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing on this site constitutes financial, investment, legal, or tax advice. Always consult a qualified professional before making investment decisions.
Do I need to create an account?
No. The calculator is completely free to use and requires no sign-up, login, or personal information.
Is my data stored?
We do not store the tickers, amounts, or dates you enter. Each calculation is processed on-demand and nothing is saved on our servers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Where does the price data come from?
Prices come from a third-party financial market data provider that aggregates official exchange data. When you run a calculation, we look up the historical adjusted closing price for your chosen date and the most recent available closing price, then work out the return between them. We don't generate or estimate prices ourselves — every figure traces back to real recorded market data.
Why is my number slightly different from another calculator?
Small differences are normal and usually come down to a few things: which data source each tool uses, whether prices are dividend- and split-adjusted (we use adjusted closes, so dividends are included), and exactly which trading day is treated as your start and end date. Currency conversion and rounding can also shift the last digits. The overall result — and the gain or loss percentage — should be very close across any reputable tool.
Can I use this for crypto, ETFs, or indexes?
Yes. Alongside individual stocks, you can enter ETFs (like SPY or QQQ), and major cryptocurrency pairs (like BTC-USD or ETH-USD). The benchmark comparison shown with your result also pits your pick against well-known indexes such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, so you can see how it stacked up against the broader market.
Does the result account for taxes, fees, or inflation?
No. The figure shown is the raw market value of your investment — it doesn't subtract brokerage fees, trading commissions, or capital gains tax, and it isn't adjusted for inflation. A real-world return after costs and taxes would typically be somewhat lower. Treat the number as a clean before-costs comparison, not a precise after-tax outcome.
Is it really free, with no catch?
Yes — it's completely free, with no sign-up, no paywall, and no limit on how many calculations you run. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads. We don't sell data or charge for any feature.
